Solid Particles

May 2nd, Wednesday 2018




Placing the metal hole atop the heat of the bunsen burner for the first time, the particles were still solid and weren't reacting to the heat energy whatsoever.



After 30 seconds, the heat energy was absorbed by the metal ball and it transitioned to a brass colour to purple, the enlargement of the ball increased by a bit before shrinking back to its original size


Putting two and two together atop the heat energy, the metal ball and hole turned into silver. Upon putting it through each other, the ball is a bit hard to put in through the hole for both metal have lost some width. It is still possible for both to pass through each other.

Critical Thinking

  1. How is this similar to Martha and her parent's life?
  • Martha’s parents are from a strict religious group, basically another word for ‘Christians’. Martha had to live her whole life in isolation, torture and despair. Unlike Gloriavale, everyone is grateful for their isolated lives. All the Christian members are given names from the bible or somewhat related to god, just like Martha. Martha’s mother makes and sews her clothes for school, forbidding her from wearing clothes from shops and limiting any contact with electronic devices. In Gloriavale, the women make and sew the clothes for the other members, having too limited from electronic devices. Martha wants to escape her depressing life and start anew with a normal lifestyle whilst the Christian community is content and happy.

The Oak Apricot is my favourite packaging because it uses 0g of fat and Apricots are considered to be one of my favourites.







Requirements:
Tne legal requirements are labelling and composition information that helps consumers what to buy. The Packaging contains what is used in the product.

  • date marking
  • name or description of the food
  • name and address of the business
  • warning and advisory statements
  • ingredients list
  • percentage labelling
  • nutrition information panel
  • use and storage direction.
What Do The label Tell Us?:
The ingredients used in a product. It contains certain ingredients that may be allergic to the buyers.



What are the two first on the list of ingredients? Why are they named first?
Apricot water because it has more portion used in the making.

LO: describe seperation via chromatography.

This week's experiment actually worked because we used the water as the solvent and the felt tip pens, solute. Since the felt tip pens contained more pigment, the solvent instantly travelled up the solute and dissolved into the pigment causing the colours to spread out and stretch.

Unlike last week's experiment. The experiment kinda failed for we used crushed leaves as the solute and ethanol as the solvent. Since we needed to grind the leaves to make a paste, it took my group to transform our batches of leaves into a runny paste. Eventually adding in the ethanol with the grind up leaves, the pigment gradually began to pour out, a brown pigment from green leaves.

Placing the brown solute onto the paper, the ethanol didn't really dissolve it instead it camouflaged with the solvent and was almost transparent.

Between the two experiments, this week's experiment was a success.

The different pigments have different sizes of particles and are carried at different speeds. That's why the blue was being outstretched first into the paper because it was the lightest pigment with a very decent amount.

Purifying Water

       26th Monday, February 2018
 L.O: Design and carry out an experiment.
LO2: Explain separation via filtration

Aim: 
To attempt purifying dirty water alongside, carrying out the discussed plan to construct the process.

Materials:
  • Paper Towels 
  • 1 Bottle
  • 2 Plastic Cups
  • 1 Thread Of String
  • Cup Of Muddy Water
  • Cotton Balls

Steps:

  • We laid out our given equipment provided in ice-cream containers, Sarah began to cut out the bottom end of the bottle in order to initiate our plan.

  • Since the bottle was so thick and hard to cut through with blunt scissors, we came up with an idea to bend the bottle to make a flat surface so that the scissors could break through.
  • After successfully cutting the bottom half of the bottle, we began to stuff numerous of tissue papers/ cotton balls in the process of purifying the dirty water.




  • After doing so, Sarah helped me tie the rope around the cloth to cover the opening where the dirty water will soak through. 

  • Successfully finishing the process of purifying the dirty water, the wet substance slowly soaked through the cloth due to the dirt and tiny rocks clogging its flow. Little by little, the plastic cup was slowly being filled with more clearer water.



Edit: Refiltering the previous purified water, I noticed how the water soaked through the cloth more quickly than last time. Having no dirt or sand mixed with the water, it's flow was faster than usual.




























Observation: On our third refilter, we changed the paper towels because the tiny particles of dirt hidden within the filtered water might flow within the water once poured again. The water has become a tad lighter than before.

Conservation Haiku

Aim: Create a Haiku poem about Conservation

Method:
  1. Search for words that relate or can describe 'Conservation', each should have the minimum of syllables that can make 5 on a line.
  2. Create a Haiku poem (5 syllables first line, 7 syllables second line, 5 syllables third line.)
  3. Share it with the teacher.
